An etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli depicting a family from Rocca di Papa in traditional regional dress, rendered with precise, clean lines.
This etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli captures a scene of daily life in the Alban Hills, specifically depicting the traditional attire of inhabitants from Rocca di Papa. Pinelli, a Roman artist, dedicated much of his career to documenting the customs, dress, and folklore of the Italian populace during the early nineteenth century. His work provides a visual record of regional identities that were often overlooked by the grander historical paintings of the period.
The composition features a man and a woman walking in profile, accompanied by a small dog. The man wears a wide-brimmed hat and carries a staff, while the woman balances a basket on her head containing an infant. Pinelli employs a clean, linear style characteristic of his etching technique. He uses precise hatching to define the folds of the fabric and the textures of the landscape, keeping the background relatively sparse to focus attention on the figures. The clarity of the line work is typical of the period, reflecting an interest in archaeological precision and ethnographic observation.
Pinelli produced numerous series of prints documenting the costumes of various Italian regions. These works were popular among travellers on the Grand Tour, who sought authentic souvenirs of the Italian countryside. The etching is signed 'Pinelli inv.' and 'e incise' at the base, indicating that the artist both designed and executed the plate himself. This print serves as a direct observation of rural life, stripped of romantic artifice, presenting the subjects with a straightforward, documentary quality. The work remains a useful reference for the study of nineteenth-century Italian regional dress and the social history of the Papal States.
