Description
A striking etching and aquatint by Wifredo Lam, featuring a hybrid, totemic figure rendered in sharp, modernist lines.
Wifredo Lam, a Cuban artist of Chinese and Afro-Cuban heritage, created this etching and aquatint during his mature period. The work displays his characteristic synthesis of European modernist techniques with the visual language of Santería and Caribbean mythology. Lam spent significant time in Paris, where he associated with André Breton and the Surrealist circle, yet his work maintains a distinct identity rooted in his upbringing in Sagua la Grande. In this composition, a central, hybrid figure dominates the space. The creature possesses avian and totemic qualities, with sharp, angular limbs and a torso marked by a singular, dark diamond shape. The figure appears suspended against a neutral, atmospheric background, which emphasises the precision of the etched lines. Lam employs a restricted palette, allowing the stark contrast between the black ink and the paper tone to define the form. The inclusion of a smaller, skull-like element at the base introduces a sense of ritual or mortality, common in his explorations of spiritual and ancestral themes. Lam often utilised printmaking to refine his visual vocabulary, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the structural essence of his subjects. The lines are deliberate and sharp, suggesting a mechanical or surgical quality that contrasts with the organic, mask-like features of the central entity. This print offers a clear view into his process of blending the subconscious imagery of Surrealism with the cultural symbols of his homeland. The work avoids literal representation, opting instead for a symbolic arrangement that invites interpretation through its formal balance and rhythmic placement of shapes. It remains a representative example of his ability to merge disparate cultural influences into a cohesive, singular visual statement.
