A dramatic 1531 altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto, depicting the Crucifixion with a crowded, emotionally charged scene of mourners and soldiers.
Lorenzo Lotto painted this Crucifixion in 1531 for the church of Santa Maria in Telgate. The composition is defined by its arched top, a common format for altarpieces of the period. Lotto organises the scene into two distinct zones: the elevated, tragic figures of the three crucified men against a dark, atmospheric sky, and the chaotic, crowded ground level where soldiers and mourners gather.
The central figure of Christ occupies the vertical axis, flanked by the two thieves. Lotto employs a dramatic use of light to draw the eye towards the central cross, while the surrounding figures are rendered with a sense of movement and psychological tension. The lower portion of the canvas is packed with activity, featuring horses, soldiers in armour, and the grieving figures of the Virgin Mary and her companions. The emotional weight of the scene is conveyed through the varied gestures and expressions of the crowd, rather than through a static, balanced arrangement.
Lotto, a Venetian artist known for his idiosyncratic style, often departed from the strict classical norms of his contemporaries. In this work, the figures display a restless energy. The colour palette is dominated by deep shadows and muted tones, which serve to heighten the somber nature of the subject. The painting remains a significant example of Lotto's ability to combine traditional religious iconography with a personal, expressive approach to narrative composition. The work is currently housed in the church of Santa Maria in Telgate, Bergamo, where it continues to be viewed in its original context.
