Lotto organises the scene into two distinct zones: the elevated, tragic figures of the three crucified men against a dark, atmospheric sky, and the chaotic, crowded ground level where soldiers and mourners gather.

The central figure of Christ occupies the vertical axis, flanked by the two thieves. Lotto employs a dramatic use of light to draw the eye towards the central cross, while the surrounding figures are rendered with a sense of movement and psychological tension. The lower portion of the canvas is packed with activity, featuring horses, soldiers in armour, and the grieving figures of the Virgin Mary and her companions.
