A 1940 watercolour by Eric Ravilious depicting ground crew de-icing aircraft in a cold, winter landscape.
Eric Ravilious produced this watercolour in 1940 while serving as an official war artist. The composition captures a quiet, technical moment at an airfield during the Second World War. A large aircraft tail dominates the foreground, its surface coated in snow and ice, which provides a stark contrast to the muted, grey tones of the winter sky. In the distance, ground crew members work on a second aircraft, their small figures emphasising the scale of the machinery and the harsh conditions of the environment.
Ravilious employed his characteristic technique of layering thin washes of watercolour to build form and atmosphere. The work avoids the dramatic action often associated with military subjects, focusing instead on the mundane, repetitive tasks required to maintain operational readiness. The palette is restricted to cool blues, greys, and whites, which effectively communicate the biting cold of the airfield. The geometric precision of the aircraft structures is balanced by the soft, diffused light of a winter day, a hallmark of the artist's approach to depicting the British landscape and its industrial elements.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of human activity and the physical world. By placing the viewer close to the iced-over tail section, Ravilious invites an intimate observation of the textures of snow and metal. The composition is carefully structured, using the diagonal line of the aircraft to lead the eye across the snowy expanse toward the activity in the background. It remains a clear example of his ability to find order and visual interest in the technical requirements of wartime service, documenting the reality of the conflict through a lens of calm observation rather than overt heroism.
