This composition depicts the final moments of Saint Francis of Assisi, captured in the fresco cycle within the Upper Church of San Francesco in Assisi. Giotto di Bondone moved away from the rigid, stylised conventions of Byzantine art, opting instead for a more humanised approach to religious narrative. The scene is divided into two distinct registers: the terrestrial realm where the friars mourn the deceased saint, and the celestial sphere above where angels carry his soul toward heaven.

In the lower section, the figures are arranged in a semi-circle around the bier. Their postures and gestures convey a sense of genuine grief, with some figures bowing their heads and others clutching their robes. The use of drapery helps to define the volume of the bodies, a hallmark of Giotto's approach to form. The colour palette is dominated by muted earth tones, reflecting the Franciscan habit, which contrasts with the lighter, ethereal blues and whites of the upper register.

Above, the soul of Saint Francis is shown in a mandorla, supported by four angels. This transition from the physical reality of death to the spiritual reality of ascension is handled with a clarity that directs the viewer's eye upward. The composition relies on a balanced arrangement of figures, creating a sense of order and gravity. By focusing on the emotional response of the observers, Giotto brings a sense of immediacy to the event. This work remains a primary example of the shift toward naturalism in Italian painting, as the artist prioritised the psychological weight of the scene over purely symbolic representation. The architectural and spatial elements are kept minimal to ensure the focus remains on the figures and their interaction with the divine.
