A detailed etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli depicting a woman from Aversa in traditional regional dress.
This etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli depicts a woman from Aversa, a town in the Campania region of Italy. Pinelli was a prolific Roman artist known for his documentation of regional costumes and local customs during the early nineteenth century. His work often focused on the everyday lives of the Italian populace, capturing specific sartorial details that defined regional identities.
The figure stands in a simple, rural setting, holding a bundle that appears to contain produce. Her attire includes a head covering, a bodice, and a full skirt, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of Pinelli's etching technique. The artist employs cross-hatching to create shadow and volume, particularly within the folds of the fabric and the texture of the ground. The background remains minimal, featuring a solitary tree and rolling hills, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's traditional dress.
Pinelli produced numerous series of prints documenting the inhabitants of the Italian peninsula. These works functioned as visual records for travellers on the Grand Tour and for those interested in ethnography. The clarity of his line and the focus on anatomical form reflect his training in Rome. This print is typical of his approach, which prioritises the accurate representation of costume over atmospheric detail. The inscription at the bottom, 'Donna di Aversa', identifies the subject's origin, while the signature 'Pinelli inv.' confirms his role as the designer of the composition. This piece offers a glimpse into the social history of the period, preserved through the medium of printmaking.
