A classic etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli depicting a woman from Calabria engaged in spinning, showcasing traditional Italian regional dress.
This etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli captures a woman from the Calabria region of Italy, rendered with the precise, clean lines characteristic of the artist's work. Pinelli, a Roman illustrator and engraver, produced numerous series documenting the regional costumes and daily activities of the Italian populace during the early nineteenth century. His work provides a visual record of traditional dress and rural life, often set against the simplified, open backgrounds seen here.
The subject sits upon a rock, holding a distaff and spindle, tools associated with the domestic task of spinning wool. Her attire, including the head covering and layered skirt, is depicted with careful attention to the folds and textures of the fabric. Pinelli employs a clear, linear style that avoids excessive shading, allowing the form of the figure to remain the primary focus. The background features a modest suggestion of a mountainous horizon and a tree, which frame the figure without distracting from her presence.
Pinelli's output was widely circulated among travellers on the Grand Tour, who sought authentic depictions of local customs. His ability to distil complex cultural identities into accessible, graphic images made his prints popular throughout Europe. This particular work, marked as number 48 in its original series, demonstrates his skill in balancing ethnographic detail with a balanced, classical composition. The print is an example of the artist's dedication to documenting the regional diversity of the Italian peninsula, a project that occupied much of his career in Rome. The clarity of the etching process ensures that every detail, from the woman's expression to the specific tools of her trade, remains sharp and legible.
