A technical study by Dutch printmaker Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, showcasing experimental etching and aquatint techniques on a single sheet.
Cornelis Ploos van Amstel was a Dutch printmaker, collector, and amateur artist who gained recognition for his experiments with printmaking techniques. This work, titled Drie proeven, translates to Three Proofs. It functions as a technical record of the artist's exploration into the possibilities of etching and aquatint. The composition is divided into three distinct sections, each demonstrating a different approach to mark-making and tonal application.
The left section features loose, gestural scribbles and circular forms, suggesting an initial investigation into line weight and pressure. The central section displays a dense, grainy texture achieved through aquatint, showing how the artist could manipulate acid to create soft, atmospheric shadows. The right section presents a more structured, geometric approach, with precise cross-hatching and parallel lines that demonstrate control over the etching needle.
These proofs offer a rare glimpse into the workshop practices of an eighteenth-century printmaker. Rather than a finished composition intended for public display, this sheet serves as a laboratory for the artist. It documents the trial-and-error process required to master the chemical and mechanical aspects of intaglio printing. The paper retains the raw, unrefined quality of a working document, providing an honest look at the development of printmaking methods during the period. By isolating these different textures on a single sheet, Ploos van Amstel created a reference guide for his own practice, allowing him to compare the visual results of varying etching times and needle techniques side by side. This piece is a study of the medium itself, stripped of narrative or representational intent, focusing entirely on the physical interaction between tool, plate, and ink.
