The artist employs a precise, linear style, using ink for the outlines and subtle watercolour washes to suggest the volume and texture of the stone and wood.

Bik, who served as a civil servant in the Dutch East Indies, produced these drawings as part of a broader effort to catalogue the diverse cultures encountered within the archipelago. The work is devoid of atmospheric perspective, prioritising clarity and accuracy for the purpose of documentation.
