Description
Dunster in Somerset is a medieval village beside Exmoor, with pale cottages, a square church tower and wooded hills seen here beneath a higher castle-like tower above the green valley.
Cloth trading helped shape Dunster, whose seventeenth-century octagonal Yarn Market survives on the High Street. This medieval Somerset village stands beside the River Avill, where the old Gallox Bridge once carried packhorses bringing fleeces towards the market from the surrounding countryside.
A thatched white cottage fills the near slope above clustered slate roofs and tall brick chimneys. Further back, a pinnacled church tower rises among green trees. Another square tower crowns the wooded hill beyond, with open fields stretching to the right. White blossoms and fresh foliage suggest late spring, under soft sunshine and a blue cloud-filled sky.
