Description
Dwarfie Stane on Hoy in Orkney rests pale and angular among green peatland shrubs, with broad hills enclosing the open valley beneath high white clouds in clear summer afternoon sunshine.
Dwarfie Stane is a chambered tomb cut into a single block of Old Red Sandstone on Hoy. The stone lies in a glaciated valley between Quoys and Rackwick, surrounded by peatland. Its rock cut passage and side chambers distinguish it from Orkney’s more usual tombs built from separate stones.
A long pale block rests low among green shrubs and brown moorland patches. Dark cracks cross its broad face beneath a gently sloping upper edge, with short grasses gathered around the base. Behind it, smooth green hills enclose a wide valley whose far wall is streaked with shadowed gullies. High white clouds and fresh vegetation suggest clear summer afternoon weather across the open ground.
