A traditional Georgian feast depicted in the distinct, flattened style of self-taught artist Niko Pirosmani.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work on oilcloth, a material he favoured for its durability and affordability. The scene depicts a traditional Georgian feast, or supra, set against a simplified, dark green hillside. The composition is arranged with a clear, horizontal focus, placing the participants around a spread of food and drink. Pirosmani employs a flattened perspective, characteristic of his approach to space, where figures are rendered with minimal modelling and bold, clear outlines.
The figures, dressed in dark, uniform attire, are positioned in a semi-circle, creating a sense of communal gathering. Their expressions are stoic, and their postures are rigid, which contributes to the iconic, almost ritualistic quality of the scene. The inclusion of Georgian script at the top of the canvas serves as a narrative element, grounding the image in its specific cultural context. The sky, filled with stylised, rounded clouds, provides a stark contrast to the dark, earthy tones of the foreground and the figures.
Pirosmani often painted for the taverns of Tiflis, and his work frequently captured the social customs of his time. This piece reflects his ability to distil complex social interactions into a singular, graphic image. The use of oilcloth results in a unique surface texture, where the paint sits atop the fabric rather than soaking into it, giving the colours a specific, slightly matte appearance. The work is a direct observation of Georgian life, presented without the academic conventions of the period. It remains a primary example of his output, demonstrating his distinct visual language and his focus on the everyday experiences of his community.
