Description
Vasily Polenov's 'Ebb Tide, Normandy' captures a tranquil coastal scene with soft, muted tones and expressive brushwork. The painting evokes a sense of peace and invites contemplation of the vastness of the sea and sky.
Vasily Polenov (1844-1919) was a Russian painter associated with the передвижники (The Wanderers), a group of Russian realist artists who aimed to depict Russian life and society. Polenov's work often focused on historical and genre scenes, as well as landscapes that captured the beauty of the Russian countryside and, at times, European locations. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, and later travelled extensively in Europe, which influenced his artistic style. He also taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. 'Ebb Tide, Normandy' presents a serene coastal view. The painting is dominated by a wide expanse of sky, rendered in soft, muted tones that suggest a cloudy day. Below, the sea stretches out to the horizon, its surface reflecting the sky's pale light. The foreground is occupied by a rocky shore, with dark, moss-covered stones contrasting with the lighter tones of the water and sky. The composition is simple and horizontal, emphasising the vastness of the scene. Polenov's brushwork is loose and expressive, capturing the subtle nuances of light and atmosphere. The overall effect is one of tranquility and quiet contemplation, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the peacefulness of the coastal environment.
