A dynamic ink and colour painting by Xu Beihong, capturing the spirit and movement of eight horses through masterful brushwork.
Xu Beihong is widely recognised for his mastery in blending traditional Chinese ink techniques with Western anatomical precision. This work, depicting eight horses in motion, demonstrates his ability to capture the spirit and energy of the animal through fluid brushwork. The horses are rendered with varying postures, some rearing and others in full gallop, creating a sense of dynamic movement across the horizontal plane.
In this composition, Xu employs a minimalist approach to the background, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the horses. The use of ink wash provides depth to the musculature of each animal, while the selective application of colour adds a distinct character to the group. The horses serve as a metaphor for the national spirit, a common theme in Xu's work during the mid-twentieth century. His training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris is evident in the structural integrity of the figures, yet the work remains firmly rooted in the aesthetic traditions of Chinese ink painting.
The horses are positioned against a sparse, open space, which suggests a vast plain. The foreground includes subtle botanical elements, providing a sense of place without distracting from the primary subjects. The calligraphic quality of the lines, particularly in the manes and tails, conveys speed and power. This piece is an example of Xu's contribution to the modernisation of Chinese art, where he sought to revitalise traditional forms by incorporating rigorous observation of nature. The balance between the individual character of each horse and the collective movement of the group creates a harmonious visual narrative.
