The narrative follows the journey of a Polish exile in Siberia, accompanied by the ethereal figure of Ellenai, an angel who guides him through the harsh conditions of his banishment.

In this composition, the artist presents a stark contrast between the physical reality of the exile and the spiritual presence of his companion. The male figure, often interpreted as a self-portrait or a representation of the suffering Polish nation, sits in the foreground, hunched over with his head resting in his hand. His posture suggests exhaustion and despair. Behind him, resting on a wooden platform, lies Ellenai. She is wrapped in heavy furs, yet her form appears light and transcendent.
