A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, depicting Emperor Charles V in armour, based on an original design by Titian.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I depicts the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in full armour. The composition derives from a prototype by Titian, a common practice for printmakers of the seventeenth century who sought to disseminate the likenesses of historical figures through the medium of copperplate engraving. Vorsterman, a skilled associate of Peter Paul Rubens, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the varied application of line to distinguish between the textures of polished steel, fabric, and skin.
The Emperor is shown in a three-quarter view, his hand resting on his hip, with a sword held in his right hand. The inclusion of a helmet on a plinth to the right adds a sense of martial authority to the portrait. The background features a draped curtain, a convention used to provide depth and focus to the subject. The inscription at the base, 'IMP. CAES. CAROLVS V. AVG.', identifies the monarch, while the credit 'E Titiani Prototypo' acknowledges the source of the design.
Vorsterman's work is characterised by a disciplined approach to shading and cross-hatching. He creates a sense of volume in the armour, capturing the way light reflects off the curved surfaces of the breastplate and pauldrons. The facial features are rendered with precision, conveying a sense of gravity appropriate to the subject's status. This print serves as an example of the collaborative nature of the Flemish print trade, where the skills of the painter and the engraver combined to produce works for a wider audience. The print remains a record of both the historical figure of Charles V and the aesthetic values of the Baroque period, where the mastery of light and form was paramount in portraiture.
