A delicate watercolour and ink study of the Moulin de la Galette entrance in Paris, created by Vincent van Gogh in 1886.
This work depicts the entrance to the Moulin de la Galette, a popular windmill and dance hall located in the Montmartre district of Paris. Vincent van Gogh produced this piece shortly after his arrival in the city in 1886. The composition captures a quiet moment at the site, featuring a path leading towards the structure, framed by trees and walls. A small figure of a child and a woman in a long skirt provide a sense of scale to the scene.
Van Gogh utilised a combination of ink lines and watercolour washes to define the space. The ink outlines are clear and deliberate, providing structure to the architectural elements and the foliage. The application of colour is relatively light, with washes of blue for the sky and yellow-green tones for the trees, reflecting his early experimentation with the lighter palette he encountered in Paris. Unlike his later, more impasto-heavy works, this piece demonstrates a focus on graphic clarity and the observation of light in an urban setting.
The Moulin de la Galette was a frequent subject for artists of the period, including Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, who were drawn to its social atmosphere. Van Gogh, however, often approached the site with a more observational eye, focusing on the geometry of the entrance and the surrounding street. This watercolour serves as a record of his transition from the darker, earth-toned palette of his Dutch period to the brighter, more experimental style that would define his later years in France. The work remains a clear example of his technical approach to drawing and colour during his initial months in the French capital.
