A striking 1872 albumen print by Giorgio Sommer documenting the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, capturing the dramatic scale of the volcanic plume.
This albumen print captures the violent activity of Mount Vesuvius during the significant eruption of 1872. Giorgio Sommer, a German photographer based in Naples, operated one of the most prolific studios in Italy during the nineteenth century. His work frequently documented the geological phenomena of the region, catering to the growing demand for scientific and travel imagery among European tourists and scholars.
The composition focuses on the massive plume of ash and smoke rising from the crater. The stark contrast between the dark, volcanic slope and the billowing, light-filled clouds demonstrates the technical capabilities of early photographic processes. Sommer utilised a long exposure to record the movement of the smoke, resulting in a soft, ethereal quality that contrasts with the jagged silhouette of the mountain. The print retains the original mounting paper, complete with decorative corner tabs, which provides context regarding its historical preservation within a private album.
Sommer was well-regarded for his ability to balance technical precision with the dramatic nature of his subjects. By positioning his camera to capture the scale of the eruption against the surrounding atmosphere, he provided a clear record of the event. This image functions as a primary source for understanding the geological history of the Bay of Naples, while also representing the aesthetic approach of photographers who sought to document the natural world during the Victorian era. The clarity of the smoke formations and the depth of the tonal range across the volcanic debris illustrate the high standard of production maintained by the Sommer studio during this period.
