A detailed study of trees by Mexican artist José María Velasco, capturing the natural textures and atmospheric light of the landscape.
José María Velasco is recognised for his meticulous approach to the natural world, a practice informed by his scientific interests and his training at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City. This study of trees demonstrates his ability to observe botanical forms with precision while maintaining a painterly quality in the handling of light and atmosphere. The composition focuses on a cluster of trees set against a muted, expansive sky, reflecting the artist's characteristic attention to the specific textures of foliage and the structural integrity of branches.
Velasco often moved between the roles of artist and scientist, frequently documenting the geography of the Valley of Mexico with rigorous accuracy. In this work, the application of paint suggests a careful layering process, where the darker, shadowed areas of the undergrowth contrast with the lighter, more diffuse treatment of the canopy. The palette remains grounded in earth tones, greens, and soft greys, which align with his broader body of work that prioritises the observation of light as it interacts with organic forms.
Unlike the more dramatic or romanticised depictions of nature common in the nineteenth century, this study presents a quiet, analytical view of the subject. The trees are not merely decorative elements but are treated as individual entities with distinct volumes and mass. The open foreground and the subtle horizon line provide a sense of scale, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the dense, dark masses of the trees and the lighter, more ethereal sky. This piece offers a clear example of the artist's technical discipline and his dedication to capturing the physical reality of the Mexican terrain without unnecessary embellishment.
