A quiet, atmospheric scene by Wilhelm Kotarbinski, depicting two women resting on a stone terrace at sunset.
Wilhelm Kotarbinski, a Polish artist who spent much of his career in Kyiv, produced works that often occupied the space between classical academicism and the dreamlike qualities of Symbolism. Evening Silence captures a quiet, melancholic mood, typical of his interest in twilight settings and classical motifs. The composition features two women resting upon a stone terrace, their figures draped in flowing garments that suggest an antique or timeless setting. One woman wears a dark, plum-coloured dress, while her companion is dressed in white, creating a subtle contrast against the muted stone architecture.
The background reveals a distant, glowing sun dipping below the horizon, casting a soft, amber light across the water. Tall, slender cypress trees frame the scene, adding a sense of verticality and enclosure that directs the viewer's eye toward the horizon. The presence of a tambourine resting on the stone ledge suggests a moment of pause after music or performance, reinforcing the theme of stillness. Kotarbinski employs a restrained palette, favouring earthy tones, deep shadows, and the warm, fading light of the sun to evoke a sense of nostalgia.
This work demonstrates the artist's technical skill in handling light and texture, particularly in the rendering of fabric and the atmospheric haze of the evening sky. Unlike the more aggressive movements of the early twentieth century, Kotarbinski remained committed to a style that prioritised mood and narrative ambiguity. The scene does not rely on complex action, but rather on the quiet interaction between the figures and their environment. It is an example of the late nineteenth-century fascination with classical antiquity, filtered through a lens of personal, often melancholic, introspection.
