A 1910 etching by German Symbolist Max Klinger, designed as a bookplate for Dr. Kuno Waehmer, featuring his signature blend of technical precision and dark, allegorical imagery.
This etching by Max Klinger, created in 1910, functions as a bookplate for Dr. Kuno Waehmer. Klinger was a prominent figure in German Symbolism, known for his mastery of the graphic arts and his ability to weave complex, often unsettling narratives into small-scale compositions. The work displays his characteristic technical precision, utilising fine, hatched lines to build form and shadow.
The imagery features a winged figure, possibly a personification of time or mortality, seated beside a scythe. A smaller, child-like figure stands to the left, interacting with the larger entity. The composition is dense, with the figures occupying the majority of the frame, creating a sense of psychological weight. The text 'EX LIBRIS' appears in the upper left, while the owner's name, 'DR. KUNO WAEHMER', is inscribed at the base. The artist's monogram and the date are visible in the upper right corner.
Klinger often explored themes of fate, death, and the subconscious. His work frequently bridged the gap between academic realism and the dream-like qualities of the Symbolist movement. This bookplate is a clear example of his approach to personal commissions, where he infused functional objects with his own distinct, often dark, visual language. The etching process allows for a high degree of detail, particularly in the rendering of the wings and the textured surfaces of the figures. The plate mark is clearly visible, indicating the physical impression of the metal plate into the paper, a hallmark of traditional intaglio printing. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of personal identity and the artist's broader thematic concerns.
