A monochrome woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicting a genre scene of a fagot-gatherer encountering children in a rural setting.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu captures a quiet, narrative moment from daily life in eighteenth-century Japan. The composition is divided by a large, stylised tree trunk that anchors the scene, separating the foreground activity from the figures gathered on the slope. To the left, a figure washes items in a stream, accompanied by a wooden bucket. To the right, a fagot-gatherer, burdened by a bundle of wood on his back, gestures towards a group of children who appear to be interacting with a small bird.
Technically, this work is a sumizuri-e, a monochrome print produced using only black ink. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, known for his experimentation with perspective and his role in the evolution of print formats. His line work here is clean and direct, focusing on the clarity of the narrative rather than excessive decorative detail. The figures are rendered with the characteristic simplicity of the period, using fluid outlines to define their posture and clothing.
The scene reflects the interest of Ukiyo-e artists in documenting the lives of common people, moving away from the aristocratic subjects that dominated earlier Japanese art. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper right corner provides a formal element typical of the era, identifying the work within the broader context of popular print culture. By focusing on a mundane encounter, Masanobu invites the viewer to observe the small interactions that define a community. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the mid-Edo period, where the balance between negative space and line-based illustration created a distinct visual language.
