A nineteenth-century albumen silver print by George Washington Wilson, depicting the waterfall at Inversnaid in the Scottish Highlands.
This albumen silver print, titled Fall at Inversnaid, captures the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. George Washington Wilson, a pioneer of Scottish photography, produced this image as part of a series illustrating Sir Walter Scott's poem, The Lady of the Lake. The photograph depicts the waterfall at Inversnaid, a location frequently visited by tourists and writers during the nineteenth century due to its association with the romanticised literary history of the region.
The composition employs a long exposure technique to render the cascading water with a soft, ethereal quality, contrasting against the sharp, textured rocks in the foreground. A lone figure stands near the base of the falls, providing a sense of scale to the natural formation. Above the waterfall, a small wooden bridge spans the gorge, where two tiny figures are visible, further emphasising the height and depth of the site. The print is presented here in its original context, mounted on a page from a published volume, complete with the printed caption and a line from Scott's poem: Each pass by mountain, lake and heath, he knew through Lennox and Menteith.
Wilson was known for his technical precision and his ability to document the Scottish terrain with clarity. His work contributed to the popularisation of the Highlands as a destination for travellers. By integrating photography with classic literature, this piece reflects the Victorian interest in combining visual documentation with national heritage. The sepia tones, characteristic of the albumen process, add a warmth to the image, preserving the atmosphere of the site as it appeared in the mid-nineteenth century. This print offers a glimpse into the early history of travel photography and the ways in which visual media shaped the public perception of the British countryside.
