Description
Fan Gyhirych in Powys spreads across golden uplands, with dark escarpments, branching stream hollows and rusty foreground heath beneath cream clouds in a clear blue sky over south Wales.
Fan Gyhirych belongs to Fforest Fawr in Bannau Brycheiniog, where a broad summit plateau ends in a steep northeastern cwm. Sandstone forms much of the hill. During the ice ages, a small glacier occupied the hollow, helping shape its distinctive escarpment.
A dark, near-vertical face drops from the flat-topped height on the left. Beyond it, lower ridges stretch across the horizon in bands of ochre and muted brown. Branching gullies cut through the open slopes, casting narrow blue-green shadows. Rust-coloured heath and long grass fill the near ground beneath cream clouds, giving the wide uplands a bright late-summer warmth.
