A detailed graphite study of a woman from the Southeast Moluccas, including a close-up sketch of her earring, by Dutch artist Adrianus Johannes Bik.
This graphite study by Adrianus Johannes Bik captures a seated woman from the Southeast Moluccas, likely the wife of the Raja of Tual on Dula Island. Bik, a Dutch artist who travelled extensively through the East Indies during the early nineteenth century, produced a significant body of work documenting the people, customs, and material culture of the region. His approach is observational, prioritising clarity and ethnographic accuracy over stylistic flourish.
The composition is sparse, focusing on the figure in profile. The woman is depicted in a seated position, her posture relaxed yet composed. Bik uses fine, controlled lines to define the folds of her garment and the subtle contours of her form. A notable feature of the drawing is the inclusion of a separate, detailed study of her earring positioned in the upper right corner. This addition reflects the artist's interest in the specific decorative elements and jewellery worn by the local population, treating these items as essential components of the portrait.
The paper retains a natural, aged tone, providing a neutral background that allows the graphite marks to remain the primary focus. The annotations at the bottom of the sheet, written in Dutch, provide context regarding the subject's identity and location. These notes offer a glimpse into the artist's process, as he recorded observations alongside his visual documentation. This work is a representative example of colonial-era travel art, where the artist functioned as both a draughtsman and a chronicler of distant cultures. The print captures the delicate nature of the original pencil work, preserving the light touch and precise draughtsmanship characteristic of Bik's sketches from his time in the Indonesian archipelago.
