A detailed pen and ink study by Gaspard Dughet, depicting figures fishing near a waterfall in the Roman Campagna.
This drawing by Gaspard Dughet captures a scene of figures engaged in fishing near a cascading waterfall. Dughet, a student and brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin, spent his career in Rome, where he became known for his depictions of the Roman Campagna. His work often features a balance between the natural world and classical order, a hallmark of the seventeenth-century Baroque tradition.
The composition utilises fine pen lines to define the rocky outcrops and the movement of the water. The artist employs hatching to create shadow and volume, giving the cliffs a sense of weight and presence. The figures in the foreground are rendered with minimal detail, serving to provide scale to the towering natural features behind them. The wash application adds a layer of depth, suggesting the atmospheric conditions of the site.
This piece reflects the period interest in the idealised natural world. Dughet often combined observed elements of the Italian countryside with a structured, theatrical approach to composition. The focus remains on the interplay between the verticality of the falling water and the horizontal expanse of the riverbank. The drawing demonstrates the technical precision required for preparatory studies of this era, where the artist mapped out light and form before committing to a larger canvas. It remains a clear example of the draughtsmanship associated with the Roman school of the mid-seventeenth century.
