A delicate pastel portrait by the Venetian master Rosalba Carriera, capturing the soft light and graceful aesthetic of the eighteenth-century Rococo period.
Rosalba Carriera was a central figure in the development of pastel as a primary medium for portraiture during the eighteenth century. Her work is characterised by a soft, atmospheric quality achieved through the delicate application of pigment on paper. This portrait of Flora demonstrates her ability to capture light and texture, particularly in the rendering of skin tones and the subtle floral adornments in the subject's hair.
Carriera, based in Venice, gained international recognition for her technical skill. She moved away from the heavy, formal conventions of earlier portraiture, opting instead for a more intimate and graceful approach. The subject is depicted with a gentle expression, her gaze directed towards the viewer. The composition relies on a muted colour palette, which allows the soft pinks of the flowers and the subject's complexion to emerge from the darker, shadowed background. The use of pastel allowed Carriera to blend colours directly on the surface, creating smooth transitions that mimic the softness of human skin.
This piece reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Rococo period, which favoured lightness, elegance, and a sense of ease. Carriera's influence spread across Europe, as she travelled to Paris and Vienna, where her portraits were highly sought after by the aristocracy. Her technique involved a precise layering of colours, often using her fingers or stumps to soften the edges of her strokes. This method resulted in a luminous finish that remains a hallmark of her oeuvre. The portrait of Flora is an example of her mature style, where the focus is placed on the psychological presence of the sitter rather than elaborate costume or setting. The simplicity of the composition directs attention to the subtle play of light across the face, demonstrating the artist's mastery of her chosen medium.
