Description
A watercolour study by Karl Bryullov, 'Forced to Swim' depicts two male figures on a beach, rendered in sepia tones with anatomical precision. The dynamic composition conveys a sense of urgency.
Karl Bryullov (1799-1852) was a Russian painter, considered a figure in the transition from the Russian neoclassical style to Romanticism. Bryullov earned the nickname 'Karl the Great' for his acclaimed history paintings, portraits, and studies. His most recognised work is 'The Last Day of Pompeii' (1830-1833). He was a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts. His work influenced later Russian artists. Bryullov's style combines academic training with a flair for drama and emotion. He was a master of depicting the human form and conveying narrative through composition and expression. 'Forced to Swim' is a watercolour study showing two male figures. One man carries the other, who appears limp or unwilling. Both are scantily clad in classical drapery and straw hats. The scene is set on a beach, with a suggestion of water in the background. The colour palette is limited to sepia tones, giving the work a classical, sketch-like quality. The figures are rendered with anatomical precision, typical of academic figure studies. The composition is dynamic, with the forward motion of the figures creating a sense of urgency.
