A 1898 lithographic book cover by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec for Georges Clemenceau's Au pied du Sinaï, featuring expressive line work and a desert scene.
This lithograph serves as the front cover for Georges Clemenceau's book, Au pied du Sinaï, published by H. Floury in 1898. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec produced a series of illustrations for this volume, which explores themes of Jewish history and identity. The composition is divided by the spine of the book, creating a distinct separation between the desert landscape and the narrative elements.
On the right side, a figure stands atop a craggy peak, gesturing towards the horizon. The lines are expressive and economical, typical of the artist's graphic work during this period. The left side depicts a stone structure set against a vast, arid expanse under a pale sun. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted ochre and sepia tones to evoke the atmosphere of the Sinai desert. Toulouse-Lautrec uses lithographic crayon to create texture, particularly in the shading of the rocky terrain and the silhouette of the figure.
The typography is integrated into the design, with the title and author's name appearing as part of the overall visual balance. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to adapt his style for commercial publishing, maintaining his characteristic draftsmanship while adhering to the requirements of a book cover. The print reflects the collaborative nature of the Parisian art scene at the end of the nineteenth century, where writers and visual artists frequently worked together on limited-edition publications. The work is marked with the artist's monogram, a common feature in his graphic output, confirming its authenticity as part of the original edition.
