A 1905 oil painting by Edvard Munch, capturing a garden in Taarbaek through expressive brushwork and a distinctive palette of blues, greens, and soft pinks.
Edvard Munch painted Garden in Taarbaek in 1905 during a period of his life spent in Denmark. The work captures a view from a high vantage point, looking down upon a garden space. Munch employs a characteristic approach to colour and form, where the application of paint is visible and direct. The trees are rendered in deep blues and greens, creating a sense of density that contrasts with the lighter, more open areas of the path and the building structure on the right.
The composition is structured by the architectural elements on the right side of the frame, which provide a vertical anchor against the organic, swirling forms of the foliage. A single, small figure stands on the path, adding a sense of scale and isolation common in Munch's work. The palette relies on a balance between the cool tones of the vegetation and the warmer, muted pinks and reds of the ground and the distant houses.
Unlike his more psychologically charged works, this piece focuses on the observation of a specific environment. The brushwork is rhythmic, guiding the eye through the garden while maintaining a flatness that emphasises the surface of the canvas. Munch's interest in the subjective experience of a place is evident here, as the garden is not merely a record of a location, but a translation of light and colour into a personal visual language. The work reflects his time in Taarbaek, where he sought a degree of calm away from his more turbulent periods. It remains a clear example of his ability to synthesise observation with his own stylistic preferences, resulting in a composition that feels both immediate and considered.
