A seventeenth-century engraving by Willem Jacobszoon Delff, depicting the Marshal of France, Gaspard de Coligny, in a formal portrait.
This engraving by Willem Jacobszoon Delff depicts Gaspard de Coligny, the Marshal of France, within a formal oval frame. Delff, a skilled Dutch engraver, was known for his precise reproduction of portraits, often working from paintings by contemporary masters. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture, presenting the subject in a bust-length format that emphasises his status and military rank.
The subject is shown wearing a lace collar and a sash, elements that reflect the fashion of the period and the social standing of the sitter. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail, particularly in the rendering of the lace patterns and the texture of the fabric. The oval border contains Latin inscriptions, a common feature in prints of this era, which provide identification and context for the individual portrayed. The lower margin includes a detailed inscription in Latin, documenting the subject's titles and the roles of the artist and publisher.
Delff's work is characterised by a disciplined approach to line and shadow. He uses cross-hatching to create volume and depth, ensuring the figure appears three-dimensional against the background. The lighting is focused on the face, drawing the viewer's attention to the features of the Marshal. This print is an example of the technical proficiency found in Dutch printmaking during the early seventeenth century, where the medium was used to disseminate the likenesses of political and military figures across Europe. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition demonstrate the artist's control over the burin, resulting in a formal and dignified representation of the subject.
