A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting Moses with the tablets of the law and a skull, exploring themes of moral philosophy.
This engraving by the Dutch humanist and artist Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert presents a complex allegorical scene. The central figure is Moses, depicted with the traditional horns of light, holding the tablets of the law in one hand and a human skull in the other. The inclusion of the skull serves as a memento mori, a reminder of human mortality and the inevitable end of earthly life. The tablets contain Latin inscriptions referencing biblical passages from Deuteronomy, Luke, Mark, and Matthew, which focus on the commandment to love God and one's neighbour.
Coornhert was a significant figure in the Dutch intellectual sphere, known for his writings on ethics and theology. His work often reflects his interest in the intersection of moral philosophy and Christian doctrine. The engraving style is characteristic of the mid-to-late sixteenth-century Northern Renaissance, employing fine, controlled lines to create volume in the drapery of the robes and texture on the stone tablets. The composition is balanced and formal, placing the figure of Moses in a static, authoritative pose that commands the viewer's attention.
The Latin text at the base, 'Lex conscientiam arguens mortem peccati generat', translates to 'The law, convicting the conscience, generates the death of sin'. This provides the thematic key to the image, suggesting that the recognition of moral law is the mechanism by which sin is overcome. The print demonstrates the technical precision of Coornhert as an engraver, with careful attention paid to the anatomy of the hands and the subtle shading of the face. It is a work that invites contemplation on the nature of law, faith, and the human condition, rendered with the clarity and intellectual rigour typical of the period.
