A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, capturing a quiet moment between two figures on a boat along the Sumida River.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a scene of leisure upon the Sumida River. Eisen, a prolific artist of the late Edo period, is recognised for his contributions to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the portrayal of beautiful women. The composition centres on two figures aboard a small boat, framed by a large, circular parasol that provides a geometric contrast to the organic forms of the subjects.
The print exhibits the characteristic flat perspective and clean lines associated with Japanese woodblock printing. The colour palette is restrained, utilising muted blues, soft reds, and ochre tones to define the textiles and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper sections of the print is a standard feature of the medium, serving to provide context or poetic commentary on the scene depicted. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions typical of Eisen's later work, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the time.
Keisai Eisen was a student of the Kano school before transitioning to the ukiyo-e style. His work often captured the atmosphere of the pleasure districts in Edo. This particular print demonstrates his ability to balance decorative elements with human narrative. The parasol acts as a visual anchor, drawing the eye across the boat while the figures engage in a quiet, intimate moment. The print serves as an example of the technical precision required in the multi-block printing process, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block to achieve the final image. The paper texture and the subtle fading of the pigments over time contribute to the historical character of the piece, offering a glimpse into the social life and artistic conventions of nineteenth-century Japan.
