Jan de Beijer was a prolific draughtsman known for his precise topographical records of the Dutch Republic. This work depicts the church of Leerbroek, a village in the province of Utrecht. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century Dutch topographical art, prioritising clarity and accurate architectural representation over atmospheric drama. The church stands as the primary subject, rendered with careful attention to its Gothic features and structural form.

The foreground introduces a quiet, rural narrative. A figure carrying a yoke walks along the bank, while a lone fisherman sits in a small boat upon the water. These elements provide a sense of scale and daily life, grounding the architectural study in a specific, lived environment. The trees to the right are executed with repetitive, rhythmic strokes, a characteristic technique used by De Beijer to suggest foliage without obscuring the view of the building behind.

De Beijer utilised a monochromatic palette of grey washes to define light and shadow.
