A detailed seventeenth-century drawing of the Roman Forum, capturing the classical ruins and daily life of the period through ink and wash.

This work by the Dutch painter and draughtsman Willem Romeyn depicts the Campo Vaccino, the historical name for the Roman Forum. During the seventeenth century, the site was a popular subject for artists from the Netherlands who travelled to Italy to study classical antiquity and the Mediterranean light. Romeyn, a pupil of Nicolaes Berchem, was known for his ability to integrate figures and animals into architectural settings.

The drawing employs a delicate application of pen and ink, supplemented by subtle grey washes to define the spatial depth of the ruins. On the right, the columns of the Temple of Saturn stand as a vertical anchor, while the left side features the remains of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina. The foreground contains a small figure with a cart and livestock, a common motif in the Italianate works of the period. These elements provide a sense of scale against the monumental structures of the ancient city.

Romeyn captures the atmosphere of the site as it appeared in the mid-seventeenth century, when the Forum was partially excavated and used for grazing cattle. The composition relies on a clear recession of planes, guiding the eye from the immediate foreground towards the distant buildings. The artist uses light and shadow to model the forms of the columns and the uneven ground, creating a sense of quiet observation.
