A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Leonard Schenk depicting the Sint-Elisabethgasthuis in Alkmaar, showcasing Dutch civic architecture.
This etching by Leonard Schenk depicts the Sint-Elisabethgasthuis, a hospital for women located in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. Schenk, a prolific engraver active during the eighteenth century, captures the architectural character of the institution with precision. The composition focuses on the courtyard and the surrounding brick structures, which were typical of Dutch civic architecture from the period.
The print employs a variety of line weights to distinguish between the textures of the masonry, the foliage of the trees, and the soft clouds above. In the foreground, small figures are shown walking or sitting, providing a sense of scale to the hospital buildings. The inclusion of a well and a low wall creates a clear division between the public space and the private grounds of the hospital.
Topographical prints of this nature were common in the Netherlands during the eighteenth century. They served as a record of urban development and civic pride, documenting the appearance of hospitals, churches, and town halls for a public interested in local history. Schenk uses a balanced perspective, ensuring that the architectural details remain the primary subject while the human activity adds a layer of daily life to the scene. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner, and the bilingual title in Dutch and French reflects the international circulation of such prints during the era. This piece offers a window into the urban environment of Alkmaar, preserving the appearance of a specific historical site through the medium of copperplate engraving.
