Along with his brother Annibale Carracci and cousin Ludovico Carracci, he was one of the founders of the Accademia degli Incamminati in Bologna. This academy helped to reform the prevailing Mannerist style of painting. The Carracci brothers promoted a return to the naturalism of High Renaissance artists like Raphael, Titian, and Correggio. Agostino was celebrated for his skills as a draughtsman and printmaker. His engravings are characterised by their technical virtuosity and attention to detail. The portrait shows Gabrielli holding a theatrical mask. The subject's gaze is direct, and his expression is somewhat enigmatic. The fine lines of the engraving create a sense of texture and depth, particularly in the rendering of the face and hair.
