A detailed Renaissance composition by Vittore Carpaccio, depicting Saint Ursula surrounded by her companions in a structured, devotional scene.
Vittore Carpaccio painted this work as part of the cycle for the Scuola di Sant'Orsola in Venice. The composition depicts Saint Ursula standing atop a palm tree, which serves as a symbol of her martyrdom. She is surrounded by a vast assembly of her companions, creating a dense, crowded scene that reflects the Venetian narrative style of the late fifteenth century. Above, God the Father appears within a celestial arch, flanked by cherubs, while two large banners frame the central figure of the saint.
Carpaccio demonstrates his skill in managing complex group compositions. The figures are arranged in a tiered manner, allowing the viewer to observe the individual expressions and attire of the companions. The architectural setting, defined by the archway, provides a sense of structure to the otherwise packed arrangement of figures. The use of light and shadow helps to separate the foreground group from the distant landscape visible on the left side of the canvas. This work is characteristic of the Venetian school, where attention to detail in costume and the integration of narrative elements were highly valued.
This print captures the specific colour palette and spatial depth of the original canvas. The composition balances the verticality of the saint and the banners with the horizontal mass of the kneeling figures below. It is a representative example of the devotional art produced for Venetian confraternities during the Renaissance period. The work remains a study in how artists of the time organised large-scale religious narratives within a confined, arched frame, ensuring that each element contributes to the overall theological message without overwhelming the viewer.
