A detailed 1763 etching by Jean-Jacques de Boissieu depicting goatherds in a serene river setting.
Jean-Jacques de Boissieu was a French artist from Lyon, recognised primarily for his mastery of etching. This work, dated 1763, demonstrates his technical precision and his interest in the rural environment. The composition features two figures with a goat positioned on the bank of a river, set against a backdrop of rugged cliffs and a distant structure.
Boissieu utilised a fine, controlled line to define the textures of the gnarled tree on the left and the rocky terrain on the right. His approach to light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground figures toward the horizon. The etching reflects the eighteenth-century fascination with pastoral scenes, where human activity is integrated into the natural world.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on grand historical narratives, Boissieu preferred the observation of everyday life and the nuances of the French countryside. His work is noted for its clarity and the balance between the human subjects and the surrounding geography. The etching process allows for a high degree of detail, visible in the cross-hatching used to model the cliff face and the foliage. This print provides an example of the artist's ability to capture a quiet, observational moment with restraint and technical skill. The inclusion of the artist's monogram and the date in the lower section confirms its provenance within his early career. It remains a representative piece of his output, which often favoured the quietude of nature over dramatic action.
