A precise etching by Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart depicting a jasper goblet and a rock crystal vase with exceptional attention to material texture.
Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart was a master of the etching medium, particularly recognised for his ability to render the specific material qualities of decorative objects. This work, produced for the publication 'Histoire de la porcelaine' and related collections of fine art objects, demonstrates his technical precision. The composition presents two distinct vessels: a goblet carved from oriental jasper and a vase fashioned from rock crystal.
Jacquemart employs a refined etching technique to differentiate the surfaces of these items. The jasper goblet is rendered with deep, dense lines to suggest the weight and opacity of the stone, while the rock crystal vase is captured through lighter, more delicate strokes that imply transparency and the refraction of light. His approach avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the structural integrity and material character of the objects themselves.
This print reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in documenting museum collections and private treasures. Jacquemart worked closely with his father, Albert Jacquemart, to catalogue and illustrate various decorative arts. His skill allowed him to translate the three-dimensional form of these vessels into a two-dimensional plane without losing the sense of volume. The stark, neutral background ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the craftsmanship of the vessels. The inclusion of the small figure atop the goblet adds a sense of scale and narrative detail to the otherwise clinical presentation. This print is an example of the intersection between scientific documentation and artistic interpretation, providing a clear record of historical artefacts while maintaining a high standard of graphic execution.
