A vintage photochrom print depicting the Golden Gate viaduct in Yellowstone National Park, captured by American photographer William Henry Jackson.
This image captures the Golden Gate viaduct in Yellowstone National Park, a structure that allowed passage through the steep, rocky terrain of the region. Produced as a photochrom, the work uses a process that adds colour to black-and-white photographic negatives through lithographic stones. This technique creates a distinct aesthetic, blending the precision of a camera with the soft, painterly qualities of a tinted print.
William Henry Jackson was a photographer who documented the American West during the late nineteenth century. His work often focused on the geological features and infrastructure of national parks. In this view, the viaduct clings to the side of a sheer cliff, demonstrating the engineering efforts required to make the park accessible to early tourists. The composition emphasises the scale of the canyon, with the road curving along the rock face while a stream flows through the valley floor below. The colour palette reflects the natural tones of the stone and the surrounding vegetation, rendered with the characteristic softness of the photochrom process.
Jackson travelled extensively with the United States Geological Survey, and his photographs were instrumental in shaping public perception of the American wilderness. By documenting sites like the Golden Gate, he provided a visual record of the intersection between human development and the natural environment. This print offers a view into the history of American travel and the early efforts to preserve and present these sites to a wider audience. The image remains a clear example of the intersection between technical innovation in photography and the documentation of the North American frontier.
