Description

A 1966 abstract work by Rupprecht Geiger, featuring bold, geometric fields of orange and red inspired by the light of North Africa.

Rupprecht Geiger, a German painter and sculptor, focused his career on the exploration of colour as an autonomous subject. Goulimine, created in 1966, represents his engagement with the physical and emotional properties of pigment. The work is composed of distinct, geometric zones of colour that interact to create a sense of light and space without the use of traditional perspective or representational imagery. Geiger spent time in North Africa, and the title refers to a town in Morocco. The palette reflects the intense, sun-drenched atmosphere of the region. The upper section features a large, luminous rectangle of orange, which sits above a broader, lower field of deep red. The composition is framed by vertical bands of a similar red hue, creating a sense of containment for the central light source. The application of paint is deliberate, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible, which adds a tactile quality to the otherwise flat planes of colour. Unlike many of his contemporaries in the Colour Field movement, Geiger was less concerned with the spiritual or metaphysical implications of his work. Instead, he treated colour as a tangible phenomenon. He often used fluorescent pigments to push the boundaries of how the human eye perceives saturation and luminosity. In Goulimine, the contrast between the warm orange and the dense red creates a visual vibration, drawing the viewer into the centre of the canvas. The work is an example of his ability to reduce a complex visual experience into a precise, geometric arrangement. By stripping away narrative elements, Geiger allows the viewer to focus entirely on the relationship between the hues and the scale of the forms. This piece remains a clear demonstration of his systematic approach to painting, where the primary objective is the investigation of colour intensity and its effect on the observer.
