This drawing by Jan Brandes depicts the administrative and religious centre of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Batavia, modern-day Jakarta. Brandes, a Dutch clergyman and amateur artist, documented his travels and observations during his time in the East Indies between 1779 and 1785. His work provides a visual record of colonial architecture and daily life within the fortified walls of the castle.

The composition features the Governor-General's residence on the right, characterised by its long, orderly facade and classical proportions. In the centre, the castle church stands as a smaller, distinct structure. The foreground is populated by figures carrying parasols, a common sight in the tropical climate of the period.
