A hand-coloured etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli depicting a domestic scene of women and a child in early nineteenth-century Rome.
Bartolomeo Pinelli was a prolific Roman artist, known for his documentation of the local populace and the customs of the city during the early nineteenth century. This etching, titled Gruppo Pittoresco in Roma, captures a domestic scene set against a simple architectural backdrop. The composition features a group of women and a child, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of Pinelli's graphic output.
The artist employs a clear, narrative style, focusing on the interaction between the figures. One woman sits upon stone steps, reaching out towards a small child held by another seated figure, while a third woman stands behind them, observing the exchange. The figures wear traditional Roman attire, which Pinelli frequently documented in his various series of prints. The hand-applied colour is restrained, using muted tones of red, blue, and pink to define the clothing without overwhelming the underlying etched lines.
Pinelli's work often appealed to the Grand Tour market, providing visitors with authentic depictions of Roman life. His ability to capture the character of the street-level population, rather than the grand monuments of antiquity, provides a social history of the period. The etching demonstrates his technical proficiency in creating depth through cross-hatching, particularly in the shadows cast against the wall and the texture of the stone steps. This print is a representative example of his interest in the everyday activities of the Roman people, presented with a clarity that reflects his training in the Neoclassical tradition. The work remains a valuable record of the sartorial and social habits of the Roman working class during the early 1800s.
