A classical Baroque composition by Gaspard Dughet, depicting the biblical figures of Hagar and Ishmael within an expansive, atmospheric Italianate setting.
Gaspard Dughet, a pupil and brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin, was a central figure in the development of the idealised classical landscape during the seventeenth century. Working primarily in Rome, he refined a style that balanced observation of the Italian countryside with the structured, theatrical compositions favoured by his contemporaries. This work depicts the biblical narrative of Hagar and Ishmael, who are shown in the lower right corner, comforted by an angel in a wilderness setting.
The composition follows a traditional tripartite structure, employing dark, framing trees in the foreground to draw the eye toward a distant, sunlit horizon. This technique creates a sense of depth, guiding the viewer from the shaded, intimate space of the figures into the expansive, atmospheric vista beyond. The treatment of the foliage is characteristic of Dughet, with dense, layered brushwork that captures the texture of the trees while maintaining a sense of order. The distant mountains and the inclusion of architectural ruins are typical elements of the period, intended to evoke a sense of antiquity and timelessness.
Dughet’s approach to light is particularly effective in this piece. The contrast between the shadowed foreground and the luminous, hazy distance provides a sense of scale and serenity. The figures, while essential to the narrative, are secondary to the environment, which functions as the primary subject. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise natural observation with the formal requirements of classical painting, resulting in a balanced and harmonious view of the natural world. This print captures the tonal range and atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's technique and his mastery of spatial composition.
