This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the Hakone region along the Tokaido Road, showcasing the area's steep mountains and scenic views, with Mount Fuji in the distance.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known for his woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai's work had a significant impact on Western art, particularly Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. His innovative use of perspective, colour, and composition influenced artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Edgar Degas. Hakone: View of Lake and Mountain, 10th Station of the Tokaido Road is part of a series depicting scenes along the Tokaido Road, the main route connecting Edo (modern Tokyo) and Kyoto. This print captures the challenging terrain of Hakone, a mountainous region known for its steep inclines and scenic views. The composition features a high vantage point, looking down upon a winding path with travellers making their way up the slope. The landscape is rendered with a combination of realism and stylisation, typical of ukiyo-e prints. The use of colour is restrained, with blues, greens, and browns creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. Mount Fuji is visible in the distance, a recurring motif in Hokusai's work.
