A striking 1976 portrait by South African modernist Gerard Sekoto, featuring expressive brushwork and a contemplative subject.
This portrait by Gerard Sekoto, dated 1976, reflects the artist's mature period during his long exile in Paris. Sekoto, often recognised as a pioneer of South African modernism, moved away from the social realism of his earlier Johannesburg years to embrace a more expressive, painterly approach. In this work, the subject is rendered with visible, rhythmic brushwork that prioritises emotional resonance over photographic accuracy.
The composition focuses on the subject's face, which is modelled using a palette of cool blues, greys, and warm ochre tones. The application of paint is deliberate, with individual strokes remaining visible to the viewer. This technique creates a sense of movement across the surface of the canvas. The subject's gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation. The background is simplified, allowing the figure to occupy the entirety of the visual space.
Sekoto's use of colour is particularly notable here. He employs contrasting hues to define the contours of the face and the texture of the hair. The interplay between the deep blue shadows and the lighter, warmer highlights on the skin demonstrates his command of light and form. By 1976, Sekoto had spent decades refining his style in Europe, yet his work maintained a connection to the humanistic themes that defined his career. This piece offers a clear example of his ability to capture individual character through a modernist lens, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the essential presence of the sitter. The work remains a representative example of his later output, where the influence of European expressionism merges with his own distinct visual language.
