A precise 1598 engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, depicting the youthful Christ after an original design by Albrecht Dürer.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, dated 1598, is a technical reproduction of a subject originally attributed to Albrecht Dürer. Sadeler, a member of a prolific family of engravers, was active in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. His work demonstrates the high level of precision expected of printmakers during this period, as they sought to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the linear language of the copper plate.
The image depicts the youthful Christ, his head tilted upwards with an expression of contemplation. The composition focuses on the play of light across the facial features and the cascading curls of hair. Sadeler employs a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to model the form, creating a sense of volume and depth. The background is kept relatively simple, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's gaze and the delicate rendering of the drapery at the neckline.
An inscription at the base of the print clarifies the relationship between the original design and the printmaker. It notes the original work by Dürer from 1506, while identifying Sadeler as the engraver in 1598. This practice of reproducing earlier masters was common, as it allowed for the wider dissemination of iconic imagery among collectors and artists. The print serves as a record of the technical capabilities of late sixteenth-century printmaking, where the engraver aimed for fidelity to the source while applying the stylistic conventions of their own time. The clarity of the lines and the controlled use of shadow demonstrate the discipline required to produce such a work, making it a representative example of the print culture that flourished in the Holy Roman Empire.
