A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Willem Jacobszoon Delff, depicting the military commander Hendrik Matthias, Count of Thurn.
This engraving by Willem Jacobszoon Delff depicts Hendrik Matthias, Count of Thurn, a figure of significant military and political standing during the early seventeenth century. Delff, a master of the burin, worked closely with the painter Michiel van Mierevelt to produce this portrait. The composition follows the conventions of the period, presenting the subject within an oval frame, a format that directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's features and status.
The Count is shown in three-quarter view, wearing armour that signifies his role as a military commander. His attire includes a lace collar and a decorative sash, elements that demonstrate the high social rank of the sitter. Delff employs a precise technique to render the textures of the metal, the delicate patterns of the lace, and the individual hairs of the Count's beard. The shading is achieved through a system of cross-hatching and fine lines, which creates a sense of volume and physical presence.
Surrounding the portrait is a Latin inscription within the oval border, which serves to identify the subject and provide context for his titles. The lower margin contains further text detailing the collaboration between the painter and the engraver, as well as the date of production. This work is a fine example of the reproductive print culture in the Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age, where the skills of the engraver were essential for disseminating the likenesses of important public figures. The print captures the gravity and authority expected of a nobleman of the era, while also displaying the technical proficiency that defined Delff's career as a printmaker.
