A detailed 18th-century engraving by Jacobus Houbraken depicting King Henry VIII, framed by an ornate cartouche and classical allegorical figures.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Jacobus Houbraken depicts King Henry VIII of England. Houbraken was a prolific engraver, known for his contributions to Thomas Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain', a collection that sought to document the figures of British history through meticulous portraiture. The work reflects the technical precision characteristic of 18th-century Dutch printmaking, employing fine cross-hatching and varied line weights to render the textures of the monarch's fur-lined robes, velvet cap, and heavy jewellery.
The portrait is framed within an oval cartouche, a common device in the period to elevate the subject. Below the portrait, Houbraken includes an elaborate pedestal featuring two putti, or cherubic figures, which add a decorative, allegorical layer to the composition. These figures interact with symbolic elements, including a mask and architectural motifs, which serve to frame the historical figure within a classical aesthetic context. The text surrounding the oval provides biographical details, noting the King's reign and his title as Defender of the Faith.
Houbraken's approach to portraiture was heavily influenced by the works of Hans Holbein the Younger, whose original paintings of the Tudor court provided the primary source material for many of these engravings. By translating these painted likenesses into the medium of engraving, Houbraken made the imagery of the British monarchy accessible to a wider audience of collectors and scholars. The print demonstrates a high level of control over the burin, allowing for subtle gradations of tone that define the facial features and the weight of the royal attire. This piece offers a clear window into the 18th-century interpretation of Tudor history, capturing the gravity and authority associated with the monarch through the lens of Enlightenment-era print culture.
